Protect yourself
Let's be honest first: nothing legal stops a fixed license-plate reader from reading your plate. What you can do is shrink the rest of the data trail it gets combined with: broker profiles, payment data and phone signals. You can also back public-records requests and local oversight.
Protect yourself
Data-broker removal
Plate-reader logs are one dataset. Data brokers sell your address, phone and vehicle info openly. Removal services file opt-outs for you.
Private payments
Virtual cards keep your real card number (and the name/address tied to it) away from merchants.
Encrypted connection
A VPN hides your browsing from your ISP and public Wi-Fi. It does nothing against cameras or plate readers.
Phone & key-fob shielding
Faraday sleeves block cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and key-fob relay signals while the device is inside.
Record your own drive
A dashcam gives you your own record of what happened on the road.
Disclosure: Some of these may become affiliate links, meaning we could earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That never changes the counts or scores. We list legal privacy tools only. We will never promote plate covers, plate-obscuring products or anything meant to evade police, and none of these tools stop license-plate readers.
Free things that work
- Ask your city or county for its ALPR policy, retention period and data-sharing list (public-records request).
- Show up when your city council votes on Flock contracts.
- Map missing cameras on DeFlock.
- Opt out of the biggest people-search sites yourself (slow, but free).
